EDDMapS is an advanced mapping platform designed to document the distribution of invasive species. Launched in 2005 by the Center for Invasive Species and Ecosystem Health at the University of Georgia, it was initially developed to assist state Exotic Pest Plant Councils in compiling comprehensive data on invasive species spread.

The primary objective of EDDMapS is to enhance the accessibility and utility of the extensive data collected annually on invasive species occurrences, facilitating informed decision-making and management efforts.

Understanding the importance of this tool involves recognizing that invasive species—non-native organisms that cause economic, environmental, or health-related harm—pose significant threats to agriculture, natural ecosystems, biodiversity, and recreation. Effective management begins with preventing new introductions and accurately mapping existing infestations within affected areas.

Dedicated to simplicity and accessibility, EDDMapS provides a user-friendly online platform for documenting, visualizing, and querying invasive species data. Its interactive interface encourages user participation through straightforward observation reporting forms, which include options to upload images and provide detailed infestation information. Submitted data undergoes expert review to ensure accuracy before being publicly accessible.

Real-time visualization of species distribution supports Early Detection and Rapid Response (EDRR) initiatives aimed at controlling or eradicating invasive species before they establish unmanageable populations. This proactive approach helps mitigate long-term ecological and economic impacts.

All collected data is scrutinized by qualified verifiers to guarantee accuracy. Once validated, it is freely available to a broad audience—including scientists, researchers, land managers, landowners, conservationists, ecologists, farmers, foresters, as well as officials in state and federal agencies—thus fostering collaborative efforts in invasive species management.
